So sit back, relax, and let’s talk all things aviators.

What are Aviator Sunglasses?

Aviator sunglasses are defined by their gentle teardrop lens shape and double bridge. Though the classic aviator was developed with a thin metal frame, aviators today can be made with a variety of materials including acetate, plastic and various alloys.

Aviator sunglasses are designed to provide optimal sun protection by shielding the entire scope of the eye from the sun and providing a large enough field of view to promote clearer vision for the wearer.

The History of Aviator Sunglasses

Though they remain a hot fashion choice that never seems to go out of style, aviator sunglasses were originally created with practicality in mind.

For the first ideation of the aviator sunglasses, eyewear company American Optical was commissioned by the US Military in 1935 as they were seeking to make eye gear to protect pilots when flying.

This is how the U.S. Army Air Corps D-1 Sunglasses came into existence, which were a simply a pair of sunglasses with plastic insulated arms.

During the first world war, aircraft technology reached a new level of advancement allowing pilots to fly higher and go faster. But, with the ability to soar to new altitudes came a new set of problems: pilots began to complain that the combination of the sun’s blinding glare and freezing temperatures induced symptoms of headaches and nausea. Naturally, these conditions tremendously impaired their ability to see clearly when flying and perform the task at hand.

By 1918, the US War department had already created a flight test organization within the Air Service Engineering Division and it was during one of their test flights that Captain Rudoph W. Schroeder got to experience these issues first-hand.

Though he wore flying goggles to protect his eyes as instructed, Schroeder ended up needing to remove them nearly 30,000 feet in the air and was instantly met with a blast of cold that froze his eye moisture, causing him to lose sight.

Though he was able to safely land the plane and set a new altitude record of 33,113 feet, the blind landing almost cost him his life.

Instantly, a need for a solution to pilots being able to fly safely in high altitudes was realized; so US Army Air Corps Colonel John A. Macready partnered with medical equipment manufacturer Bausch & Lomb to create adequate eyewear for this issue. After a few designs were created and tested, the classic metal frame aviator sunglasses that we know today were officially patented by the manufacturer in 1939.

They would become popular during World War II, when newspaper photographers captured US General Douglas MacArthur landing on a beach wearing the shades in the Philippines. Now solidified as an unofficial symbol of World War II, the style became even more popular when movie stars like Marlon Brando, Gloria Steinem and Tom Cruise wore them in films.

Since then, the love for this style has only increased allowing aviator sunglasses to remain the top sunglass pick of sunglass wearers today.

Now that you know the history of aviators, let's break down the different types of these beloved shades.
